Literature for Second Grade Students
With books children can explore a whole new world of information. Through books children can see what we have been learning about and experience the word. Literature is a very important part of this unit on Where We Live. Literature give the students the well rounded experience needed to fully understand everything that we learned about. This page lists two nonfiction and two fiction books that are quality literature for your second grader. These books are just suggested literature and books that I will use but there are so much more out there to use and help your children learn and grow.

Kottke, Jan. (2000). A Day with Firefighters. New York: Children's Press.
I selected this book because in the unit we talk about community helpers and firefighters are community helps. Also this book is very short and a book that special needs children will be able to understand because the vocabulary and words that they use are very easy for them. The book bolds the words that are important in firefighting, so the children will know. This is a book that the children will be able to read by themselves after they have learned some of the words. The book is appropriate for students that are special needs and they will be able to read the book once they have worked on it for a little while.
This book use really photographs of firefighter, shows them in action, and everything that they do. There is bold words throughout the book, so the children can learn new words and can them associate the words they learn in the book to firefighting. There is a small table of contents, to tell them what they will be learning about in the book. There is also a glossary of all the new words that they have learned and they are defined in there, too. The book includes sources where they can find more information out about firefighting, and then there is an index with the words they have learned.
I will use this book as a read aloud after we have talked about community helpers. I will read the book to my students because they will have a hard time reading. What we will do after we read the book is talk about the firefighters in our community and if they have ever been to our house or have seen them working. This would lead into an introduction of the firefighter from our community that came to visit. I choose this activity to do with the children because they will have some prior knowledge that they can use when they ask question to the firefighters and will learn more this experiences.

Schonberg, Marcia. (2000). B is for Buckeye: An Ohio Alphabet. Chelsea, MI: Sleeping Bear Press.
I selected this book to use with this unit because it an alphabet book that has information about place, people ,and what has happened in Ohio. The book is a little hard for them to read by themselves, but it is a book they will enjoy, can relate to and learn new information from. This book is not good for special needs students to read on their own. They can look at the pictures and everything, but the book is very good for a read aloud, a reference for the teacher to use, or a book to learn more inforamtion about Ohio.
This book use includes more information about the topic that was being discussed on that letter page. The author includes quite a bit of information that the children might enjoying hearing about and learning more about. The book also includes hand painted pictures that are well done. The pictures add to the book and make each page exciting and colorful. The children would really enjoy this book and will like looking and pointing at the pictures.
I will use this book as a reference book, a read aloud, and a writing activity because there is lots of information in the book that would be overwhelming to the students if they were to read it on there own. So I would read the book to the children in parts and we would talk about what we have learned as we go throughout the book. After we have talked about what we have learned we will write a little bit about it in our journals, so they have some knowledge they can take with them. I choose these activities to do with the kids because they will be able to take more away from this activity and learn more and they will be more involved.

Marzollo, Jean. (1997). Home Sweet Home. New York: HarperCollins.
This book is about the different kinds of animals and how they all share the same home which is called earth. There are many different animals that are throughout the book from small to large, and from land to water animals There is no set setting other than different place that animals live on earth. The theme of the book is calling one place home and have a sense of family and belonging, calling the same place home, which is Earth. I chose this book because it will be a book that the children can read and they can look at. Also the books deals with the sense of feeling at home and knowing where your home is. The pictures in the book are well done and are colorful and there are lots of animals in the book, so the book is exposing them to different animals and where they live. The book is a good connection to the textbook. The book is appropriate for special needs students that are in second grade because the book is very easy to read and understand. Once we have gone over the book a few times and some of the words they might not know, they should be able to read it on there own and understand it.
I will use this book to teach the students more about where they live and how we all come from the same place and live in the same world even though we are different I will use this as a read aloud. I will read the book to the children several times throughout the week, so they can understand the book. Then we will discusses the book and all the different places that the animals in the books lived and all the different places the we live. We will then make a chart of the places that we live so we can compare and talk about it later on. I choose to do this with my students because they will enjoy talking about where they live and seeing where there friends live and what type of home they live in. Also this is a good way to get the student to interact with each other and get them talking.

Suess, Dr. (1990). Oh, the Places you'll Go!. New York: Random House.
This book is about an unnamed charterer that we follow throughout the book on the journey, leaving a town to explore. The charterer travels through many different cities. The charter then lands in a place called "The Waiting Place" where it is said to believe that is where everyone goes to wait. The charter moves on to other places to explore and to see what is out there. This book connects to the textbook because we talk about different places that you might visit or go to and that book explores and discusses all the place that you will go and what will happen and why it is good to explore The book is very rhythmic and rhyming so the kids will enjoy listening to book be read to them. The pictures that are in the book are kid friendly and very colorful that the kids will love looking and pointing out the pictures. This book is appropriate for me to read to the student but it is not one that they will be able to read on there own. There are some tough words that they will not know how to say or understand without me reading the book to them.
I will use this book as a model for writing and reading. We will first read the book together. Afterwards we will write down all the places that the character went if any were named and we will discuss them. Then we will write down all the places that we have been and we will write own story. The story will be much different than the one we read. Also the students will give their input onto what we should include in the book and write about. Then we will share the book with others. I choose to do this activity with the students because it gets them thinking that there are other places than just where they live to go and visit and maybe they will go and see one of these places with there family. It also helps and teaches them writing, which they can always use practice on.
